What Are The CDC's Recommendations for Wearing Face Shields?

The questions keep coming, so today we are answering more, including “what are the CDC’s recommendations for wearing face shields?”

What Are The CDC’s Recommendations for Wearing Face Shields?

A: The CDC does not recommend using face shields or goggles as a substitute for masks, however, in situations where a shield is necessary – such as when you cannot wear a mask or when working in an industrial environment that requires face shield use, they have a couple of pieces of advice –

  • Choose a face shield that wraps around the sides of your face and extends below your chin or a hooded face shield. This is based on the limited available data that suggest these types of face shields are better at preventing spray of respiratory droplets.
  • Wash your hands after removing the face shield. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth when removing it.
  • Clean and disinfect reusable face shields according to the manufacturer’s instructions or by following CDC face shield cleaning instructions. If you use a disposable face shield, wear it once and throw it away according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Does It Matter Where My Face Shield Is Made?

A: We think so.

A lot of the face shields on the market today are made in China. This causes a problem because China does not have the same quality control standards as we have in the United States. This means that face shields made in China may have materials that are harmful to your health in them. In the U.S., we keep very strict control over what goes into products which is why we make all of our face shields in the U.S.

We don’t want you to have dangerous chemicals near your face and you shouldn’t want that either!

Aren’t Face Shields Really Uncomfortable? I Have One That Digs Into My Skin!

A: All face shields are not created equal. Many of the cheaper face shields out there are made with limitations on how adjustable they are and that can mean that your face shield is too tight. That tightness very quickly causes discomfort which can be very distracting!

Another problem with some face shields is that they don’t incorporate any type of padding into the headband. Again, this lack of padding causes your face shield to rub against your head and very quickly become uncomfortable!

At AWXC, our face shields are made to be adjustable enough for your comfort. We also incorporate a thick foam padding to make sure that your skin remains protected while wearing your face shield.
